After winning four consecutive tournaments, the Delray Beach Redhots Under-14
Girls entered the 16th Jupiter Presidents Day Tournament on a mission.
Delray Beach coach Tony Stevens said
he decided to have the girls "play
up" an age group to give the players a tougher challenge. The Redhots
hadn't lost a game in its four previous tournaments and outscored its opposition
62-9 in the 16 games.
It was mission accomplished, as the Redhots lost three players to injuries
but still managed to record a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over the host Jupiter
Sting U15 girls' team for its fifth consecutive title.
Haylee Shoaff was solid in goal as she shut down the Jupiter team by stopping
numerous point blank shots and keeping the Redhots in the game until the offense
kicked in.
"It was a complete team effort where every member stepped up and had
an impact on the game," Stevens said.
The Redhots opened the tournament with a 5-1 victory over the Makos U14 team;
however, the victory was costly as the Redhots lost midfielder Sarah Miskel
to a cracked rib, putting her out for the balance of the tournament.
Delray then beat the Renegades U15 girls 2-0 and tied the Jupiter Sting 1-1
in the third game, where the Redhots lost two more players to injury and had
to finish the tournament with 11 players.
Goals were scored by Marissa Koolik (four), Alle Salerno (two), Hannah Speer
(two) Erin Heidel (one), Gilda Doria (one), and Alexi Zaremba (one).
This win comes on the heels of an undefeated FLUGSA regular season, where
the Redhots finished in first place at 11-0-3, scoring 47 goals while giving
up only six.
